Thanksgiving story. My cousin-out-law (not in-law because other half and I cannot legally marry) took the occasion to basically gloat to me, "Sorry about the election." "You're not sorry," said I. "Well, I'm pleased with it," he said. "I will never get my rights now," I responded. "That's not my priority," he said. So I said, "Of course it isn't. No one gives a rat's ass about us." He had no response to this. However, I have since thought about it and realized that my comment was unfair. There
are people who give a rat's ass about us; he's just not one of them. So, let me herewith amend my statement.
"Of course it isn't. If you personally could make a choice between guaranteeing me my full civil rights and you making fifty more dollars a year, you would choose the fifty dollars in a heartbeat." That is the truth, and unfortunately it is true of far too many people. And that is the problem.
